  7.     CHANNEL HOPPING? Ted Koppel's contract with ABC expires at
  8. the end of this year, and colleagues say he is being wooed
  9. mightily by CBS to replace Dan Rather. Koppel is very close to
  10. CBS News President David Burke, a former ABC executive who
  11. helped negotiate his current lucrative contract. CBS would be
  12. willing to tailor its evening news to Koppel's on-camera
  13. strengths, emphasizing interviews over canned news items -- a
  14. change that would set CBS's offering apart from its rivals'.
  15. Koppel has never craved an evening anchor post, but the chance
  16. to re-invent the format could prove irresistible. A spokeswoman
  17. says, "No one but Ted and his wife knows what his plans are
  18. when his contract expires."
